About

John has been creating beautiful earthen vessels for over 40 years.  An “interest” developed into a passion for working in clay – particularly throwing on the wheel.  After receiving a B.A. in Art and Education from Whitworth College in Spokane, Washington, he moved on to finish his Master of Fine Arts at the University of Montana in Missoula in 1974.   There he studied under Rudy Autio.

From that time to the present, he has continued his work out of his studio in Florence, Montana.  His initial work was in stoneware and porcelain and primarily focused on function and design.  Porcelain remains his favorite medium but the greater challenges come from glazing – formulas and technique.  John uses a varied pallet of glazes.  One of the most unique processes, and difficult to master, is the crystalline glaze.

The combination of expert throwing skills and utilization of unique crystalline glazing techniques has manifested itself in works of art that are truly “one of a kind”.  John’s work can be found in many homes and private collections throughout the United States and abroad.
